Von Detten-Kolleg was built by the foundation of the catholic family von Detten (founded in 1599) and opened in winter term 1963/64. Initially the foundation’s purpose was to support the family’s descendants’ education. To do so, first the members of the family received scholarships, then a dormitory for pupils was built. Later the foundation decided to built a students’ dormitory to help overcoming housing shortage among students.

Von Detten-Kolleg is located in Horstmarer Landweg, close to the university’s sports grounds, between FH Münster (university of applied science) and Leonardo Campus. A bakery and a copy shop are just around the corner, York Center (shopping centre) is 1 km away and so is Coesfelder Kreuz.
