Von Detten-Kolleg was built by the foundation of the catholic family von Detten (founded in 1599) and opened in winter term 1963/64. Initially the foundation’s purpose was to support the family’s descendants’ education. To do so, first the members of the family received scholarships, then a dormitory for pupils was built. Later the foundation decided to built a students’ dormitory to help overcoming housing shortage among students.
